Having Problems with MS FrontPage?
Here is Help! Your question and answer are probably here:
WHY DOES FRONTPAGE SUDDENLY STOP WORKING? Microsoft updates interfere with FrontPage operation. Your FP will often refuse to work if you have automatic updates pending download. If your FP absolutely refuses to work after a MS update is downloaded, then go to Start, Help and Support, RESTORE computer to a day before and there you go... (until next MS update...)
Does the html you enter DISAPPEAR after you close the page? REMEMBER TO FIRST GO TO TOOLS, THEN SELECT PAGE OPTIONS, THEN HTML SOURCE. CHECK THE BOX NEXT TO: PRESERVE EXISTING HTML. DO NOT PUT ANY CHECK MARKS IN ANY OTHER BOXES. THEN PRESS RESET at the bottom of that screen. NOW, ANY CHANGES YOU MAKE TO THE HTML OF YOUR PAGES WILL REMAIN AS YOU WROTE THEM.
GO TO START, THEN TO YOUR CONTROL PANEL. CLICK ON NETWORK AND INTERNET CONNECTIONS. THEN CLICK ON INTERNET OPTIONS. GO TO PROGRAMS. THERE YOU WILL SEE: HTML EDITOR. SET IT FOR FRONTPAGE.
MAKE SURE FRONTPAGE EXTENSIONS ARE ENABLED ON YOUR WEBSITE HOST ACCOUNT. ASK YOUR HOSTING COMPANY TO "FIX" YOUR ACCOUNT'S FP EXTENSIONS. USUALLY, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO THIS YOURSELF THROUGH YOUR CONTROL PANEL ON YOUR HOSTING ACCOUNT.
If your FrontPage is extremely slow to load your site, then just be patient and wait for it to load. WHEN IT DOES FINALLY LOAD, immediately go to Tools and Recalculate Hyperlinks. I do this now every time I add a new page, BEFORE CLOSING FRONTPAGE each time, because I have so many pages. Follow the procedure below for best results with huge sites:
Here is how I handle FrontPage: (I have over 3,000) pages in FP 2002 version. The best procedure to follow BEFORE working in FP is to FIRST clear your computer go to Start, then to Internet and Network Options, choose Internet Options. DELETE COOKIES, DELETE FILES AND DELETE HISTORY. Then you open FrontPage. If you do not clear out your computer this way every couple of days, too many files build up and your computer cannot "get through" the accumulated files to reach your web server.
THEN open FrontPage and go immediately to TOOLS. Select Recalculate Hyperlinks. This is a rather slow process if you are on dialup or have a ton of pages as I do. Be patient and wait until it completely reloads.
This process will take several minutes, so just relax. Watch the status of the progress by reading the comments at the bottom of the screen. First the status says "Recalculating hyperlinks", then "Loading" and you need to patiently wait until you see the new loaded list of webpages appear.
Do you make changes on a page, then go back and the old stuff is still there? Are you not seeing your pages listed in FP after you build them and you know the pages are online? OR: When you try to open FrontPage, do you get the message that the server cannot be located or that the "web connection is not available" OR “access violation, system exception"?
All you have to do is CLEAR your computer as explained below, then reopen FrontPage. and recalculate hyperlinks. You will connect to your website with no problem and you will see your revised page.
Is Front Page jumping all over when you try to make entries? CHANGE the batteries in your mouse if you have a battery-powered mouse. Still jumping?? Get NEWER batteries. Batteries get old fast. Humidity, etc. causes batteries to lose power.
IMPORTANT! Go to www.microsoft.com and check to see if there are any PATCHES for your version of FrontPage. For example, there is one for FrontPage 2002. Download any FrontPage patch which is for YOUR VERSION.
RESTART THE COMPUTER. Are you still having problems? Then go to your hosting and request that the FP extensions be "fixed".
If your FP still does not work, then get your installation CD ready. Go to Control Panel, remove Programs, and browse down to your FP. Remove it. Now, turn OFF your computer and turn it back on. Go to START, then RIGHT CLICK and choose EXPLORE. Browse down the list probably shown on the left side, (NOT THE BIG FOLDER SYMBOL WHICH SAYS PROGRAMS) to PROGRAMS, then choose FrontPage. There you will see your old folder where you had FP previously. Make a NEW folder by going to FILE then NEW. Now call it something simple.
Now, insert the FP CD. When you get to the point where it TELLS YOU where it "wants" to install your FP, CHOOSE BROWSE, and browse to your C drive, Programs, FRONTPAGE and then click on the NEW FOLDER YOU JUST MADE. Install in the new folder.
BE CERTAIN THAT YOU HAVE FIRST REMOVED THE OLD SETUP. YOU DO NOT WANT TO TRY TO LOAD FP ON TOP OF AN EXISTING FP.
Why are we doing this? Because maybe your FP had become CORRUPTED. Sometimes you just need to UN-install and RE-install in a NEW folder to clean things up. HOWEVER, remember that USUALLY all you have to do is CLEAR your computer and RECALCULATE HYPERLINKS to solve FP problems.
IF STILL REFUSING TO WORK, THEN
GO TO START, HELP AND SUPPORT, SELECT TOOLS, GO TO ADVANCED, AND
CHECK THE ERROR LOG. THEN RESTORE SYSTEM TO PRIOR DATE BEFORE ERRORS.
BE SURE TO DOWNLOAD ALL THE MICROSOFT PATCHES FOR FP AND FOR YOUR VERSION OF
WINDOWS REMEMBER, THE SECURITY STUFF IS NOT ALL THE MS NEEDED STUFF!!! You
have to go to www.microsoft.com and HUNT down which downloads you do not
presently have.

IF YOU STILL HAVE A PROBLEM, MAYBE THE PROBLEM IS WITH YOUR WEBSITE. ONCE IN A GREAT WHILE, YOUR HOSTING COMPANY NEEDS TO UPDATE AND YOUR SITE IS DOWN FOR A SHORT TIME.
GO TO INTERNET EXPLORER AND TYPE IN THE URL OF YOUR SITE, FOR EXAMPLE: http://www.myweb.com, AND CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR SITE IS "UP" OR NOT. IF IT IS NOT "UP", YOU SHOULD E-MAIL YOUR HOSTING COMPANY TO ASK IF THEY ARE UPDATING OR IF THERE IS ANY OTHER REASON FOR WHICH YOUR SITE IS "DOWN".
LASTLY, IS YOUR DSL MAYBE TEMPORARILY "DOWN"? ONCE IN AWHILE, EVEN THE BIGGEST DSL COMPANIES ARE DOWN FOR MAINTENANCE. SOMETIMES UNEXPECTEDLY. THAT SEEMS TO BE THE NATURE OF THE BUSINESS.
HOW TO MAKE WEB PAGES WITH FRONTPAGE:
First, you need to know that FREE sites DO NOT WORK with FrontPage. Why not? Because FREE sites DO NOT HAVE FRONT PAGE EXTENSIONS. If you need a great cheap hosting company, I recommend www.myhosting.com to you! Their prices are super and their support is great!
Open FrontPage. Click on FILE at top left. Then click on OPEN WEB and give it your URL. It will ask you for your password. Once your website loads into Front Page, you are ready to build your homepage. At the top you will see a row of icons. The first one on the left is a white page. Click on it. Now you have a new blank page. If you are making the homepage of your website, click on FILE at the top left, and SAVE AS: index.html
Now begin your text which will constitute your homepage and insert your pictures if you wish.
HERE IS ANOTHER WAY YOU CAN USE FRONTPAGE TO WORK ON YOUR WEB PAGES. Go to Internet Explorer and call up your web page. Look at the top row of icons. You should see a box with an arrow on it. If you do not see this icon, simply click on the tiny box at the end of the icon tray to show more icons. Then you will see the box with the arrow on it. Click on this icon and you can edit your web page with FrontPage. The icon should already be set for FrontPage because you selected FrontPage as your html editor in your control panel. The icon will ask you if you wish to edit with FrontPage. Select FrontPage and get going on your editing.
To insert a picture, go to Insert at the top of your screen and choose PICTURE, then choose FROM FILE. Browse to your photo which may be on your "C" drive and double-click where your photo is stored.
If your photo is too large or too small, here is the easy way to adjust the size:
Right click on the photo itself and select Picture Properties. Then a screen opens which will allow you to change the picture size. This is one easy way and I prefer it. Here is the other way: choose the way you prefer:
Click on the HTML tab at the bottom of your FrontPage screen. Locate your image in the html. You will see width and height numbers. Play with these numbers until the photo looks good to you.
Here is an example: <img border="0" src="TILEFOUNTAIN.jpg" width="440" height="652"> To reduce the size of this photo, all you need to do is decrease the width to 240 and the height to 452.
Go to FILE, and SAVE AS: You must save your homepage as index.html Each time you revise your pages, FrontPage will give you this message: There is already a page with this name on your site, do you wish to REPLACE it? Select YES.
When you finish building your homepage, when you close this page in FrontPage, this new page will become the homepage on your website. BUT YOUR VISITORS CANNOT SEE YOUR PHOTOS. WHY NOT? BECAUSE ONLY YOU CAN SEE THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE ON YOUR COMPUTER DRIVE.
So, here is what you need to do so that your visitors can see your pictures:
WHEN YOU INSERT A PICTURE, FP SAVES IT ON YOUR WEBSITE HOSTING, BUT REMEMBER NO ONE CAN SEE THE PICTURES UNTIL YOU CORRECT THE HTML CODE AS EXPLAINED BELOW.
Here is step by step how to insert a
picture into a webpage using FrontPage.
Go to FrontPage. Call up the page on which you wish to insert a photo.
LEFT click on the page at the point where you wish to insert the picture.
Now, go to INSERT, which is at the top of your FrontPage panel.
Click insert. Then choose PICTURE. Then it gives you some choices. Select FILE.
Now, browse to where the photo is, for example on your C drive or in My
Pictures. To get to My Pictures, you must select first My Documents, then My
Pictures.
When you see the Name of the photo you wish to insert, DOUBLE CLICK ON THAT NAME
OF THE PHOTO. The photo will insert itself. If you only click once then you have
to select insert.
NOW you can see the photo inserted on your webpage in Front Page. DO NOT GO TO
THE HTML yet. CLOSE THE PAGE FIRST. It will ask you if you want to save the
picture. CLICK YES. and let the page close by itself. Do not interfere with the
process. Allow FrontPage to do its work. During this time, Front Page has
uploaded the photo to your website file manager.
Now, RE-OPEN the same page. You will see the photo on the page. Click on the
photo and go to the html view. You will see the highlighting where the image is
located. THIS IS WHEN YOU ENTER YOUR URL after img src=
for example: src="http://www.NAMEOFYOURWEBSITE.com/pic.jpg
HERE IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE. NONE OF YOUR VISITORS CAN SEE THIS PICTURE:
<img border="0" src="TILEFOUNTAIN.jpg" width="440" height="652">
. YOU SEE YOUR PICTURE BECAUSE YOU HAVE THEM ON YOUR HARD DRIVE.
YOU MUST CHANGE THE HTML CODE TO READ LIKE THIS:
<img border="0" src="http://www.yourwebsite.com/TILEFOUNTAIN.jpg" width="440" height="652">
NOW, your visitors CAN SEE THE PICTURE, because it is on your web hosting.
You should NOT link to photos on other people's websites (called "hotlinking")
because they often MOVE the photos, change the URL, or delete altogether. The
best is to go find photos which have no copyright protection, right click and
save the photo as SOME SIMPLE NAME, such as PIC1 or PHOTOnew1 DO NOT ADD jpg,
because this will automatically be added. . Save them all in ONE place, either
on your C drive or in My Pictures.
TO INSERT MUSIC INTO YOUR PAGE:
You need to FIRST go to your Control Panel, go to Network and Internet Connections, then go to Internet Options, then click on the tab for COMPATIBILITY. IF YOU ARE GOING TO INSERT MUSIC, YOU MUST CHANGE THE SETTING TO: "BOTH INTERNET EXPLORER AND NAVIGATOR". Remember when you are finished inserting the music, to reset the compatibility to ONLY INTERNET EXPLORER. Most of the time, this is the compatibility setting you need.
Now, to insert a midi piece of music into your page, go to the page and RIGHT CLICK ON THE PAGE, go to Page Properties. About one half down the screen, you will see BACKGROUND SOUND. Here is where you browse to the location on your drive where you have stored the midi. Click on the stored midi and Front Page will insert it into your page.
PLEASE REMEMBER, you cannot use music which is copyrighted. So this means you need to choose either CLASSICAL or FOLK music midis for your music on your web pages. Simply go to Google and ask for "free classical midis", etc.
The midi site will explain to you how to save the midis on your drive.
HOW TO INSERT BACKGROUNDS INTO YOUR WEB PAGES:
Go to the top of your FrontPage screen; click on FORMAT. Select BACKGROUND. Now you have to choose between inserting a background which you have saved on your drive or simply choosing a COLOR. At the top of this screen you will check the little box and then BROWSE to the location of your background on your drive. Click on its location and it will be inserted. If you need backgrounds, simply go to Google and ask for "free backgrounds". Right-click on any background you like and save it on your drive.
If you simply want a beautiful solid color for your background, then go to the middle of the Background box and select COLOR. You can choose from standard, custom colors, more colors.
I hope these tips help you with using FrontPage.
