PERSONAL STATEMENT
FROM A PERSON AFFLICTED WITH BINGE EATING:
Many people suffer from binge eating, or
over-eating, including myself. From the earliest time I can recall, my
mother was always feeding me extra food. Maybe it relieved her own
personal anxieties, feeding me. Sometimes I think that may have been a
factor. We had a lot of stress factors in our home. Father often out
of work, on strike. Little or no income. Mother with no work
experience. She was always thin and remained thin throughout her life.
Not the case with me, however. Every day is a problem for me. If I
feel anxious, then I eat. I eat to quell the nervousness, the fears I
face. Instead of drinking alcohol, instead of being addicted to other
things such as gambling, I eat. I do not really believe my over-eating and
binge-eating derive from my poverty-stricken childhood. When I am under
pressure, real or imagined, I eat. I feel under stress most of the time.
Deadlines to finish building websites for customers, stress of other kinds
besides business, such as children with ADHD, pets needing a lot of attention,
friends with their problems calling me for advice. Any of these events
triggers an attack of binge eating to attempt to quell the anxiety. And it
does work until another stressful moment comes my way. Then it is time to
grab any high calorie food which I know is bad for me, but that is what I want
to stuff in my mouth and eat as much of it as possible until I cannot eat any
more of it.
