WHAT IS TAMIFLU?

About Avian (Bird) Flu

Oseltamivir is an antiviral drug, a neuraminidase inhibitor used in the treatment of and prophylaxis of both influenza A and influenza B. Oseltamivir was the first orally active neuraminidase inhibitor commercially developed. It was developed by Gilead Sciences and is currently marketed by Hoffman La Roche (Roche) under the trade name TamifluŽ.

Oseltamivir is a prodrug, usually administered as oseltamivir phosphate, with the drug being converted hepatically to the active metabolite GS4071 in vivo.

Like zanamivir, oseltamivir acts as a transition-state analogue inhibitor of influenza neuraminidase.

On March 1st 2005, the U.K. government announced that it would be stockpiling enough oseltamivir to treat a quarter of the country's population, in preparation for a possible H5N1 avian flu pandemic.

What is a Pandemic?

However, stockpiles will probably dwindle quickly in case of a pandemic outbreak. Toward the end of May 2005 Roche Holding AG confirmed that huge demand for TamifluŽ was causing a production bottleneck, with new customers likely to face waiting time of up to two years.

In order to satisfy U.S. demand, Roche planned to open a new production plant in North America during the second half of 2005.

Tamiflu also appears to be active against canine parvovirus, feline panleukopenia, and the canine respiratory complex known as "kennel cough." Veterinary investigation of this is ongoing, but many shelters and rescue groups have reported great success employing Tamiflu in the early stages of these illnesses.
